Cortona - flat shoes, chocolate festival and a rich cultural centre
Cortona was founded between the 700 and 600 BC. That is more than 2000 years ago.
More. Than. Two thousand. Years. Ago. Let’s just take that in for a second...
What is so different about this town?
This is where the movie ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’ was set. Although, it turned out that the famous fountain portrayed in the movie and that many tourists come here for was actually made of clay and later removed.
But don’t despair, because this town will still fascinate you. With hilly streets (there is only one flat street in Cortona), you will need comfortable shoes.
Cortona is perfect for a day visit and it’s located only 30 minutes from Florence.
Check out this amazing aerial view, you will feel like you are there.
It’s a town that believes in culture, but most importantly in learning from culture, from traditions, from a wealth of knowledge that ancients have left to us, if we are willing to listen.
In fact, Etruscans knew that Cortona would make a strategically positioned location amongst cultural centres, such as Florence, Arezzo, Pisa.
If you plan your Italian trip in September, don’t forget to visit Choco Cortona, a festival dedicated exclusively to artisans of chocolate.
I love Italy.
