How to pronounce the word ‘bruschetta’ and why that matters

Unfortunately, the Italian appetiser bruschetta is now appearing in nearly every menu all over the world. Why would I say ‘unfortunately’?

For two reasons, really:

1)      because of the way it is pronounced by inattentive users.

2)      because of what’s become of it.

Let’s talk about reason # 1.

CH in Italian is ALWAYS pronounced like the English K.

Therefore, SCH of bruSCHetta must be pronounced like SK (just like in ‘musketeers’):

/broos-keh-t-tah/ and not /broo-sheh-ta/

The sound we use to silence people 'shhhhh' is not correct.

 

While writing this post, my husband pointed at the fact that maybe nobody really cares about how they pronounce bruschetta.

After all, they still manage to get it delivered to their table, regardless of how they said it.

The problem is that this mispronunciation happens every time we encounter Italian words with CH. Think for instance at words such as Chianti (a wine), Chinotto (a soft drink), fichi (figs), and pistacchio (a nut) to name a few.

See what I mean? You are surrounded by these.

But why should we care about a correct pronunciation?

I can guarantee that your understanding of someone talking to you in Italian will improve much faster if you pay attention to your own pronunciation.

This is because you are training your brain to distinguish those sounds. And when you hear them pronounced by others you will recognise them easily.

Not only that, but you also learn to accept that the 'different', different from your mother tongue, is ok. This will provide your brain with so much flexibility.

 

Ok, back to reason #2 - Why did I say that 'unfortunately' bruschetta is appearing all over the world?

It's because of how monstrous some bruschette (plural of bruschetta) have become.

It's supposed to be a very basic recipe, of humble origins and simple flavours.
